The SEER is key to knowing the energy efficiency of our air conditioning system

The SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) is the standard for air conditioning units adopted by the US Department of Energy and it has become the standard for this line of business. By looking for the SEER rating on labels you will be able to save money on your utility bills.

The SEER has replaced the previous specification, the EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio), which is currently considered to be less complete and strict than the former. For air conditioning units with a heat pump, the COP (Coefficient Of Performance) was used but, as in the preceding case, this will be replaced by a more precise one: The seasonal coefficient of performance (SCOP).

Fortunately, the SEER rating already appears on the labels, therefore it will be much easier to calculate the energy efficiency level of our air conditioning unit. In order to establish it, the cooling output during its normal annual usage is divided by the total electric energy input in watt hours (W/h) during the same period.

The most significant advantage of trusting the SEER and not the EER to establish the real energy efficiency of our air conditioning unit, is that the latter measures the power of the device in full mode, i.e. as cool as it can be, while with the SEER it is measured at partial loads (100%, 74%, 47%, 21%) which, in reality, is more like normal household use.

The higher the SEER, the more efficient the unit that you are going to buy, but it will also be more expensive. Therefore it is important to find a balance, because a cheaper unit with a very low SEER will be more expensive in the long term.

How can I find out how much electricity I will use with the help of the SEER? It is actually very easy. Let us look at a high efficiency unit by way of example: If an air conditioning unit, with a cooling power of 2500 W has a SEER of 8.5. What does this mean? That if we divide the power between the efficiency the result will be that the consumption is 294 W/hour or, in other words expressed in Kwh, 0,294.

In order to find out how much money you will be paying each hour, you simply have to look at the price of the Kwh on your electricity bill and multiply the resulting amount by the number of hours a month that you use the appliance. This will enable you to know the energy efficiency level of the air conditioning unit and save you money too.

With the introduction of appliances with Inverter technology, i.e. those that instead of having a compressor that starts up and turns frequently, these turns on and remain on in order to maintain a constant temperature, the energy efficiency of the air conditioning unit is much higher, therefore choosing a SEER can help us save even more money.
