How to change your contracted power

Increasing or reducing your contracted power is an important decision that you cannot take lightly. Reducing your contracted power can help you save, but it is very important to at least choose an option that caters to your basic needs. Make sure to read all information about this before taking a decision.

Choosing the contracted power that best suits your needs

You must answer the following question when calculating your home's contracted power needs: how many electrical appliances are usually connected and functioning at the same time?

Endesa's free power calculator provides you with the information you need to calculate how many kW you really need.

We will help you to choose the most suitable power

With the new power calculator you can adjust the power to your real needs.

How much am I paying for my current contracted power?

Your bill shows two main elements:

  • Your energy consumption: this has a variable cost. It will be different each month. The higher the kWh you consume, the higher the bill. You will save on your bill if you manage to reduce your consumption.
  • Contracted power: this is a fixed cost, calculated according to the total kW capacity chosen. This cost is charged to you every month. You may choose to increase or reduce your contracted power, in kW (and, therefore, pay more or less, respectively).

How can I calculate the contracted power I need?

There are easy “amateur” ways of working it out: if your circuit breaker never trips, it’s likely you have some margin to reduce service capacity. However, you’re already at the limit if it frequently trips.

We recommend using Endesa's power calculator to give you an idea of what you need. Keep in mind that changing your contracted power is not a decision that you can take lightly

Contracting more service capacity than you need:

Unnecessarily higher bills.

Contracting less service capacity than you need:

Interruptions in supply, which will mean you have to increase the service capacity again (at an extra cost).

What is the cost of changing the contracted power?

If you need to change your contracted power, your distribution company will charge you the following amounts (including VAT, estimated amounts):

  • Approximately €9 for reducing your contracted power, regardless of how much you reduce it. This will appear in your next bill as "grid connection charges".
  • Approximately €46 for each kW of contracted power you increase. This will appear in your next bill as "grid connection and access rights".
  • Depending on the distributor, you may also be charged for other procedures or will ask you to make a deposit.
  • In addition, you may be required to pay for the electricity bulletin (between €50 and 200) if you need a new bulletin to be issued.
  • Remember that you can increase or reduce your contracted power in multiples of 0.1 kW.
  • In principle, distributors only allow 1 change per year.

Until December 31, 2023, companies and the self-employed will be able to make this change at no cost (subject to some exceptions).

Item Increase your contracted power Reduce your contracted power
Extension rights 17,37€ 0€
Access fees 19,70€ 0€

Total cost 46,11€ 9,04€

The distributors in each region are shown below. Please keep in mind that you are not free to choose your distributor, i.e., it will be assigned according to your place of residence:

Map of Spain with the zone for each electricity distributor. The information is then explained afterwards in text.

Although there is overlap, especially in border areas, the electricity distribution companies cover the following areas:

  • e-distribución: Catalonia, Aragón, Andalusia, Balearic Islands, Canary Islands and the province of Badajoz.
  • i-DE: Basque Country, Navarre, La Rioja, Castile and León except the province of Segovia and the west of province of León, Madrid except the south of the Autonomous Community, the province of Cáceres, west of the province of Toledo, north of the province of Guadalajara, the Valencian Community and Murcia.
  • UFD: Galicia, the west of the province of León, the province of Segovia, the south of the Autonomous Community of Madrid, the province of Ciudad Real, the province of Cuenca, most of the province of Toledo and the south of the province of Guadalajara.
  • E-REDES: Asturias.
  • Viesgo Distribución: Cantabria and some parts of southern and western Asturias.

What is an electricity bulletin and how much does it cost?

This document certifies that everything is in order in your installation. Below is an explanation of why the electricity bulletin or Certificate of Electrical Installation (CIE) is so important.

Your distributor may request it in the following situations:

  • More than 20 days have passed since the last update.
  • The contracted power you are requesting is higher than that shown in the electrical bulletin.
  • If you have changed your contracted power.
  • You are requesting a change in contracted power for a new home in which you have never lived.
  • You live in the Canary Islands and wish to change your contracted power.

You need to hire an authorised technician, who will prepare a new bulletin for you: the cost varies greatly (€50-200), so we recommend asking for more than one quote.

How much will you save if you reduce your contracted power?

The effect of reducing your contracted power is immediate and constant on your bill, since you will be reducing a fixed cost every month.

For the average household, this means saving about €3 per month and around €50 per year for each capacity tranche you reduce.
