How to make your own homemade air conditioner?

Summer is here and, with it, come the high temperatures, which means that most homes against start to use an appliance forgotten during the winter months: the air conditioner.

Although it is true that using it makes our house a better temperature, it also increases electricity consumption considerably in the summer months and, therefore, the associated financial costs.

To try to avoid these extra costs, there is the alternative of making your own homemade air conditioner.

With these appliances it is more complicated to evenly cool the rooms than with industrial apparatus. However, the cost difference involved means that it may be worthwhile trying them.

Materials necessary to build your own homemade air conditioner.

In addition to being an economical way of cooling a room, the materials necessary to make this apparatus are easy to get and very reasonable. Although there are different options, to make the simplest model you just need:

  • A box: this will be used to make the body of the apparatus, for which reason the best option is to use a waterproof box which, in addition to better insulating the inside of the box, does not let the liquid formed in it out. A white cork box can be used for this, or even a portable fridge. If you cannot get a box of these characteristics, you can also use a medium-sized cardboard box and line it to make it waterproof.
  • A table-top fan: the bigger and more powerful the fan, the more the room will be cooled, but the consumption will also be higher. Its size also depends on the size of the box you have chosen to use as this will act as support.
  • Two PVC pipes: these will be responsible for discharging the cold air from inside the box. If the box chosen is very large and the fan has very high power, more than two pipes can be used.
  • Ice bags: this is the most important element of the air conditioner, since the ice will produce the cold necessary to lower the room’s temperature. The most economical version is to make the ice bags at home from hermetically sealed bags and ice cubes, but you can also buy them in a supermarket or even a petrol station.

In addition to these main materials to manufacture the apparatus, you will also need other stationary materials such as scissors or glue.

Making the apparatus step-by-step.

In first place, you must make three holes in the box (one in the upper part and two in the side) to place both the fan and PVC pipes. At this point it is important to indicate that both elements must be perfectly fitted, for which reason you must take care not to make the holes larger than necessary. If the fan or any of the pipes is a bit loose, you can resolve this by adding a bit of silicone or duct tape.

It is important that the fan is placed facing inward, so that the room’s air is introduced in the box. Furthermore, in this way, the plug will be outside the box and can be plugged into the power socket.

Finally, the ice bags are introduced inside the box. This will mean that the room’s air sucked in by the fan is cooled and, once cooled, it exits through the installed PVC tubes, reducing the room temperature.

Once finished, the apparatus can be placed in the room you want to cool, reducing both the electricity bill and the emission of greenhouse gases.

You will reduce electricity bill and the emission of greenhouse gases
