What are the electricity time bands?
The price of electricity changes every hour of the day for 24 hours. These hours are grouped into time bands: Peak (with the highest price), standard (intermediate price) and off-peak (cheapest price). We will explain what the electricity time bands currently are.
The difference between peak, standard and off-peak hours has to do with the hours of the day when there is greater or lesser consumption and the cost of producing the energy during each of those hours. As a general rule, in tariffs with time discrimination the price per kWh of electricity is higher during the day (peak and standard) than during the night (off-peak).
Currently, it is very important to know the price of electricity and how it varies with regard to the different time bands. This will help you decide if you are still interested in having a tariff with discrimination by time band or if you would prefer to contract a tariff with a stable price or a flat-rate electricity tariff.

The time bands are the periods when the price of electricity (the price for each kWh you use) varies depending on the time when it is consumed.
The day is divided into three time bands: Peak hours, standard hours and off-peak hours.

Off-Peak Time Band
The off-peak time band runs from 12 midnight to 8am on weekdays and all through the day at weekends and on public holidays. The off-peak time band is the period when the consumption of electricity is the cheapest.
Standard Time Band
The standard time band covers 3 bands or periods throughout the day from Monday to Friday. In the morning from 8am to 10am, in the afternoon from 2pm to 6pm and in the evening from 10pm to 12 midnight. These are the times when tariffs with time-discrimination are moderately priced.
Peak-Hours
The peak hours are in two time bands and as for standard hours they only apply from Monday to Friday when it is not a public holiday. The peak hours for electricity in a tariff with time discrimination are from 10am to 2pm and 6pm to 10pm.
It is the time of the light tariff in which the price of kWh is more expensive.

Tariffs with discrimination by time slot apply the time when electricity is used to calculate the price per kWh in accordance with the time slot when the electricity is consumed.
It is very important for you to know the times for each time slot so you can try to concentrate consumption in the most economical slots. There are also alternative electricity tariffs that do not discriminate by time slot and these may be better adapted to your life style.
And what about power? Off-peak power and peak power
The contracted power is measured in kW and defines the limit for your electrical installation. It is the maximum you can ask for, above these kW what will happen is that the power will cut off. The more power you have, the more electrical appliances you can use at the same time... but the more you will have to pay in the section of your bill corresponding to power.
For power there are two time bands. You can have the same contracted power in both, or a different power in each band:

Off-Peak Time Band for Power
The off-peak time band for power runs from Monday to Friday that are not public holidays from 12 midnight to 8am. Both on public holidays and on Saturdays and Sundays the off-peak time band lasts 24 hours a day.
This is the time band when electricity power per kilowatt contracted is the cheapest. If you are going to need more power in some hours, it is best if it is in these since this is when the kW is cheaper.
Peak Time Band for Power
The peak time band for power is for electricity supplied from Monday to Friday (working days) from 8am to 12 midnight. This is when contracted power has the highest cost per kW.
Do the electricity time bands affect all consumers?
Another factor to consider and which will be important to explain, is knowing how the electricity time bands affect your bill. This will depend on the type of tariff you have contracted and whether you are in the free market or the regulated market (PVPC).
This is because the time bands affect three items on your bill:
- Consumption: the price you pay for the electricity you consume (kWh).If you have a tariff with time discrimination the price per kilowatt/hour varies throughout the day in accordance with the peak, standard and off-peak time bands. An interesting alternative where you can save is, if you can concentrate your consumption in the off-peak hours, to contract the One Luz 3 Periodos tariff.However, other alternatives include fixed price tariffs or flat rate models, where the electricity time bands do not affect the price of your consumption.In the regulated market the tariffs always have time discrimination so the price always varies throughout the day depending on the time.In the free market you have more alternatives: tariffs with billing by time discrimination, tariffs at a fixed price per kWh and tariff models with a stable quota per month regardless of what you consume.
- Power: the price you pay for the contracted power (kW).For domestic consumers, with powers less than 15kW, the price of the contracted power is always subject to timetables, in this case to two time bands: Peak and off-peak.
How can you know if a tariff with peak, standard and off-peak time bands will suit you
Most tariffs on the market with time discrimination are governed by these three time bands, for example the One Luz 3 Periodos tariff.
A tariff with different time bands for the price of electricity is ideal for those who are willing to be more efficient and adapt their timetable so they can save on their bill.
Another option is that, instead of adapting to the tariff, you contract a tariff that suits you.
