Safety Advice: Electricity and Gas

Making responsible use of gas and electricity is key in order to save energy and be more efficient in energy consumption.
In the following, we provide you with some recommendations regarding electrical safety, along with a series of important considerations in the use of gas in your business.

Advice About Electricity Use

  • It is important that the people who work in your business know how to cut the power in the case of an incident or problem.
  • Always avoid the contact between water and electricity:
    • In order to use any type of electrical device your hands and feet should be dry, and it's preferable that you be wearing shoes.
    • With any electrical device, first ensure that it is not wet.
    • When you clean your business and/or perform any type of maintenance, don't aim water at cables, meter cabinets, coupling boxes, etc.
    • Electrical appliances and outlets located in your business's kitchens and bathrooms ought to be grounded.
  • Handle electrical devices with care:
    • Check that the voltage for your electric devices is suitable for your business and that you have sufficient electrical capacity contracted.
    • Disconnect electrical devices by pulling the plug; never pull the cable directly.
    • Use grounding wires for your electrical devices if available and if permitted by your installation.
    • Whenever you carry out maintenance tasks on your installations, you should leave them with the same, if not better, technical specifications following the work. Remember that you should never worsen your business's installation.
    • Locate electrical appliances a safe distance from the wall, or in areas with good cooling so as to avoid overheating. In the case of malfunction, smoke or any unusual odour, disconnect appliances immediately and have a technician check them.
  • Keep your electrical installation safe:
    • Make sure that the general switch and the control box and protector are in an easily accessible location.
    • At least once per month check that the RCD is working correctly.
    • If you have to do work on any electrical installation, cut the switch prior to doing so. Use one outlet for each connection, when possible.
    • Never use devices with stripped cables, broken prongs or deteriorated plugs. Don't make multiple connections, as this may cause overheating.
    • If you get "shocks" from a device, unplug it immediately and call a technician.

Advice About Gas Use

  • Check the state of the ventilation grilles. Never obstruct them.
  • In the case of prolonged absences, close the general shut-off valve of the gas for your business and for the appliances that use gas.
  • The appearance of the flame in the boiler indicates whether the gas pressure and the air input are correct.
    • The flame must be stable and silent and should have an intense blue colour at the core, with a lighter-coloured exterior.
    • A short blue flame often indicates an excess of air, which signifies capacity loss.
    • A yellowish and long flame often indicates a lack of air. This type of flame lowers the boiler output increasing environmental contamination.
  • It is recommended that gas leak detectors be installed in the place where the boiler is located.
  • Annually check the gas installation and ensure that the components are in perfect condition.
  • If your business or office smells of gas:
    • Close the general shut-off valve and gas appliance controls.
    • Open doors and windows
    • Do not turn on switches.
    • Do not light matches or use lighters.
